More cops violating their oath of office to support our constitutions:

I read the article. A couple thoughts...
1. Those officers need to do some soul searching about what the oath that they took really means. They are violating their oath.
2. If the sheriff knows a guy is a wife beater (in the article), then the guy should be arrested. All hypothetical of course. The sheriff will say his wife won't press charges. Well, maybe so. But if he doesn't have enough to charge him, he doesn't have enough to deny him his rights. And that's the crux of the matter.

Today's Enterprise Ledger has an article where our sheriff address the commission with great misinformation trying to kill the "bad gun bills". I will be on the agenda to address these issues at the next regular meeting and work with the newspaper to correct the issue.

I have a request. (mostly Trebor, but eddiemax seems to have all this at hand as well). I wish to use the blatant racism in the vehicle permit law and political rally prohibition in support of these laws. I would like just a quick reference to when the law was put in place if either of you have it handy.

As stated in this topic, our sheriff is obviously violating his oath, as is the AL Sheriff Assoc. - I plan to make this clear.

Thanks for the quick history rundown, EM!

If I read that correctly, it seems fair to say that the vehicle prohibition was brought into its present form (without regard to concealment) in 1956 - which is roughly 2 years after the recognized start of the civil rights movement.

I believe that is sufficient to show some level of racism for the vehicle restriction. I will keep looking for when the demonstration law went into effect.

The history for each statute is shown below the statute in the Code:

Example:
Section 13A-11-59
Possession of firearms by persons participating in, attending, etc., demonstrations at public places.

...

(Acts 1979, No. 79-455, p. 743; Code 1975, §13-6-131.)[/quote]

That indicates that the statute was first implemented thru Act 455 of the 1979 session of the legislature. It was re-codified in 1975.
“Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy.” Brandeis,...

Not sure of the day this Act passed but this could have had something to do with it...

Rally Hostility between the groups flared in July 1979 when protesters disrupted a screening of the 1915 epic, The Birth of a Nation directed by D. W. Griffith, a cinematographic portrayal of the formation of a Ku Klux Klan, in China Grove, N.C.

I am fairly sure the Act already passed before the massacre took place..

I am speculating I really don't know...Some event probably triggered this Act. I am not sure what it was..I am searching timelines to see if I can find anything..

Seems like I remember something about picket lines, coal miners and long strikes and hundreds of state troopers darting around from place to place back in '79.

You guys are really helping a bunch!

That article was so hyped-up and one sided; the sheriff also addressed our Rotary Club with the same crap and got on TV with it. I will try to get in there, too. I plan to go full bore on the racism aspect of gun law, and use the poll tax oppression aspect as well. I am confirmed on the agenda Tuesday afternoon, so I really have to throw this together. I might even bring up that old slave code for pistol permits. I believe that is still posted on the legacy site.

I found all the slave stuff.

Do you think the Sheriff put a little pressure on his men to sign the petition?

Lee, I understand how the "shall issue" provisions and the appeals process might influence you to like this version of the bill we once supported. Your sheriff pulled your permit on the word of a man who made ridiculous claims about you. ...
